Performance Standards

While content standards identify the knowledge and skills that students should acquire in a content area (the “what”), performance standards specify “how well” students should be able to perform the knowledge and skills as they engage a particular content area. Performance standards are typically described from two perspectives under NCLB: Academic Achievement Standards and Performance Level Descriptors.

Academic Achievement Standards specify various levels of performance on an assessment, and identify how well a student must perform to achieve a particular level. Achievement levels used to identify student performance on Iowa’s statewide assessment are Low (which includes a Weak and a Marginal achievement range), Intermediate (which includes a Moderate and a Skilled achievement range), and High (which includes an Accomplished and a Distinguished achievement range). Students achieving at the Intermediate or High achievement levels are considered Proficient for NCLB accountability purposes.

Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs) are verbal descriptions about the knowledge and skills that a student at each of the achievement levels can “do.” They describe what a typical student at each achievement level is able to do. These descriptors are useful in providing information to parents/guardians about what their children are able to do, and provide information to teachers for instructional planning.
